Family Caregiver

Family caregiver amount (FCA)

What is the Family Caregiver Benefit?

If you are providing care for someone who has a disability affecting their physical or mental abilities, you may qualify to receive an additional benefit. This amount, which can change annually, could apply to one or more of the following:

  • Spouse or common-law partner credit
  • Amount for an eligible dependent
  • Child tax benefit
  • Caregiver benefit

To qualify, the individual with the impairment must meet certain conditions:

This benefit is available for a spouse, common-law partner, child, or another dependent who is over 18 and has a physical or mental disability. The impairment must be long-term and permanent, and the individual must rely on you for support with daily personal care needs compared to others their age.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) generally requires a signed statement from a healthcare provider, outlining when the impairment began and whether it is expected to persist. You may claim this benefit for multiple dependents.
